“You Are Still Alive” solo feature at IMPULSE/Pulse Miami
http://visitsteve.com/news/you-are-still-alive-at-pulse-miami/
Charlie James Gallery presents “You Are Still Alive” at Pulse Miami 2009.
Steve Lambert will be featured at Impulse with Charlie James Gallery at the Pulse Miami Art Fair from December 3 thru 6, 2009. Selected works from Lambert’s “Everything You Want Right Now!” solo show will be featured, as well as the debut of his Arrow Sign print editions. This solo project will be entitled “You Are Still Alive” and is organized around the idea of the liberating power of simple truths.
Steve Lambert has been working as an artist and provocateur for over ten years now, disrupting the stream of corporate-driven communication that showers down on us 24-7, and more importantly empowering regular people to Think Different, and not in the way of those old, fairly vacuous Apple computer ads, but by actually causing it to happen through his work. For an example of Steve jamming the corporate communication system, we can look at his newest edition of prints. Steve bought a large, lighted arrow sign on a stand and put it up around LA with non-corporate and sometimes personal messages on it: You Are Still Alive pointing at a cemetery, for example. Funny, definitely, but poignant as well. Using the techniques of commercial signage, Steve will make for PULSE Miami light-box marquees that take commercial speech to its logical conclusion: Park & Spend, Money Laundered; Everything You Want, Right Now! Steve’s signs tell baldly, as if it were the truth, the lies that hide behind commercial signage: endless abundance, endless choice, consumption with joy. For his solo project at IMPULSE Miami, Steve will present a combination of lighted signs, hand-painted signs, and new print work in an installation organized around the idea of the liberating power of simple truths.

The plants are voiced by comedians and neighbors, including; Reggie Watts, James Bewley, Cathleen Carr, Maria Del Piano, Courtney Robinson, Jonathan Shahn, Steve Trevelise, Kenya Robinson, Stefanie Connell, Maya Connell, and Larry Bogad.
Eyebeam Open Studios
Eyebeam will hold Open Studios for Artists In Residence, Student Residents, and Senior Fellows Friday, October 23 and Saturday, October 24, from 3-6pm. A two-day presentation allowing a rare inside look at the current state of research at Eyebeam.
Eyebeam is pleased to host Open Studios for its 2009 Senior Fellowships and Summer/Fall residents at Eyebeam’s state-of-the-art new media design, digital research, and fabrication studio; showcasing work in the areas of performance, experimental film, wearable technologies, open culture and sustainable art.
Eyebeam’s residents are selected from two yearly open calls of emerging artists, technologists and engineers for a five-month residency, which includes a stipend as well as access to Eyebeam’s facilities, equipment, and opportunities for collaboration and presentation of work. This group of five residents was selected from a group of 195 applicants.

September 27 – November 15, 2009
Since 1992 the San Francisco Arts Commission has been enlisting local artists to create original posters for the kiosks along Market Street between Van Ness Avenue and the Embarcadero. The Art on Market Street Kiosk Poster Series provides round-the-clock access to contemporary art for thousands of pedestrians. The artists, who work in a variety of media to reflect urban life, have included such well-known SF artists as Seyed Alavi, Megan Wilson, Kara Maria, Katherine Aoki, Amanda Hughen, Owen Smith, Jason Jagel, and Mark Brest van Kempen. The Bedford exhibition pays homage to this successful and model public art project by featuring thirty of the original 6ft by 4ft posters.

Our Subject Is You at Weatherspoon Art Museum
http://visitsteve.com/news/our-subject-is-you-at-weatherspoon-art-museum/
Opening Reception + Performances: 7-9:30 pm, June 19
“Our Subject is You” is the first exhibition organized by the Weatherspoon Art Museum to focus on participatory art. The artists in the exhibition rely on the involvement of the public in order for their work to be realized. They form avenues for meaningful engagement within the context of the gallery, inviting museum visitors to contribute to the creation of artwork through social interaction, collaboration, and/or performativity. Artists included in the show are Tonico Lemos Auad (Brazil/UK), Harrell Fletcher (USA), Nina Katchadourian (USA), San Keller (Switzerland), Steve Lambert (USA), Darren O’Donnell (Canada), Sherri Lynn Wood (USA) and Erwin Wurm (Austria).
In the exhibition, museum visitors will take part in the formation of artwork and through special live participatory events at the June 19th opening. Through this process, “Our Subject is You” anticipates visitors will become aware of a collapse between the traditional boundaries that define spectator from artwork, or spectator from performer, and perceive themselves to be active participants in the creation of art and culture.
The embrace of social collaboration in art has its roots in the Happenings and interactive works produced by artists such as Yoko Ono and Alan Kaprow in the 1960s. Now reformulated by globalization and the widespread use of the internet, the works in “Our Subject is You” reveal how participatory practice has increased in relevance—and prevalence—among artists over the past decade.
“Our Subject is You” is co-curated by conceptual artist and UNCG Assistant Professor of Art, Lee Walton and Weatherspoon Curator of Exhibitions, Xandra Eden. Support for San Keller’s work is generously provided by Pro Helvetia, Swiss Arts Council.

Charles James Gallery 975 Chung King Road Los Angeles, CA 90012
EVERYTHING YOU WANT, RIGHT NOW! - NEW WORK BY STEVE LAMBERT APRIL 25 TO JUNE 6, 2009 ARTIST’S RECEPTION APRIL 25, 2009 6 - 9PM
Charlie James Gallery is pleased to announce LA’s first solo show of internationally renowned artist-activist Steve Lambert. You may have encountered Steve’s work already, though you may not be aware of it. Maybe you saw him interviewed on CNN, or listened to him on NPR. Lambert’s work operates in popular culture, using everyday language and humor to convey ideas that both subvert and expand the worlds of art, free technology, and media. In the course of his work, Lambert has worked with volunteers to close every McDonald’s in Manhattan; he has renamed a street in San Francisco, and replaced advertising on the internet with curated art images. Perhaps most famously, Lambert and the Yes Men orchestrated the New York Times Special Edition, wherein he and his collaborators wrote, printed and distributed a near-perfect imitation of the New York Times, its differences detectable only in its content, which included a cavalcade of ‘if only it were true’ headlines like “Iraq War Over” and “Maximum Wage Law Succeeds.”
In Everything You Want, Right Now!, Lambert takes on the vernacular of commercial signage with a regional emphasis unique to Los Angeles. Visually, he is interested in what makes certain styles of signage feel so innately familiar, and in the methods that signage employs to grab our attention. Lambert will investigate the numerous emotional promises that inhere in commercial advertising, promises that may excite or reassure us, while remaining ultimately undelivered. The business of fine art and the relevance of the white cube gallery will also come under the scrutiny of Mr. Lambert. Under his direction, the Charlie James Gallery will be transformed into something reminiscent of an over-eager appliance store during the 6 week run of his show. The gallery will be festooned with pennants inside and out, the windows painted over with garish promises of “Slashed Prices!” while the interior pulses away with lighted signage, all promising wild levels of deliverance to the viewer.
Steve Lambert is the founder of the Anti-Advertising Agency and the lead developer of Add-Art (a Firefox add-on that replaces online advertising with curated art images). He has collaborated with numerous artists including the Graffiti Research Lab, Packard Jennings, and the Yes Men. Steve’s projects and art works have won awards from Lower East Side Print Shop, Rhizome/The New Museum, Turbulence, the Creative Work Fund, Adbusters Media Foundation, the California Arts Council, and others. His work has been shown at various galleries, art spaces, and museums both nationally and internationally, and was recently collected by the Library of Congress. Lambert has appeared live on NPR, the BBC, and CNN, with reportage of his exploits captured in multiple outlets including the Associated Press, the New York Times, the Guardian, Harper’s, The Believer, Good, Dwell, ARTnews, Punk Planet, and Newsweek. He is a Senior Fellow at the Eyebeam Center for Art and Technology in New York, and teaches at Parsons/The New School and Hunter College. Steve studied sociology and film before receiving a BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute in 2000 and a MFA at UC Davis in 2006.
About Charlie James Gallery: Charlie James Gallery formed in 2008 in Seattle, WA and had its debut in Chinatown, downtown Los Angeles in November of 2008. The gallery exhibits emerging and mid-career artists confronting issues of contemporary cultural significance. Housed in a 1947 Chinatown manufacturing building and newly redesigned by Dane Johnson, the gallery is situated amidst numerous other contemporary art galleries of strong reputation. The gallery is open Wednesday to Saturday from 12-6. For more information please visit http://www.cjamesgallery.com or email info@cjamesgallery.com.

It’s Not Us, It’s You - at San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art
Go and see work I prepared special for this show entitled, Steve Lambert refused to participate in this exhibition because the San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art does not budget for artists fees, mixed media, 2009.
Exhibition: April 4 – June 20, 2009 Opening Reception: Friday April 3, 6-8 PM
It’s Not Us, It’s You is an exhibition that explores the inevitability of rejection in our lives – a timely topic in today’s woeful economic climate. Through a tragic and sometimes heartbreaking lens, the artists in this exhibition respond to the reality of rejection with subversion, self-reflection, humor and brutal honesty. The show is guest curated by artist Ray Beldner and includes paintings, sculpture, video, and multi-media work from artists Anthony Discenza, Stephanie Syjuco, Michael Arcega, Kara Maria, Steve Lambert, Jonn Herschend, Dee Hibbert-Jones, Nomi Talisman, Desiree Holman, Orly Cogan, Kate Gilmore, Robert Eads and Arthur Gonzalez.
As part of It’s Not Us, It’s You, Beldner is compiling a book of artist rejection letters. Artists are invited to send their rejection letters via email to info@sjica.org with “FOR REJECTION SHOW” in the subject by March 28. The ICA promises that no entries will be rejected for this project.
It’s Not Us, It’s You is presented in the ICA’s Focus Gallery, Cardinale Project Room and Night Moves windows (after-dark programming in the ICA’s front windows) from April 4 through June 20. An opening reception on Friday, April 3 from 6-8pm will feature an open-mic session for rejection confessions.

Climate for Change at Liverpool’s FACT
http://visitsteve.com/news/climate-for-change-at-liverpools-fact/
I’ll be at this for the first week for the first week of the exhibition.
Climate for Change
13 March - 31 May
In 2009, FACT (Foundation for Art and Creative Technology) is exploring how humans can be invested in the change needed to sustain civilization and examining the multiple crises affecting the world: ecological, financial, food, housing. Is society itself becoming unsustainable?
The 21st century has finally hit and there is an energy in the air - how do you respond? Forget the eco-art and bring on local, national and international debates, actions, contexts, struggles and solutions.
With residents from Eyebeam’s Sustainability Research Group, Stefan Szczelkun, Melanie Gilligan and more, Climate for Change is an experiment in local activism and engagement.
